We may have our hands full fighting the chaos Trump/Musk and Co. are creating in the US, but if we don’t pay attention, the fires in Israel/Palestine will burn us here too.
I’ve endeavored to keep up on all of it. It is absolutely overwhelming. I’m deeply disappointed in the way that the Israeli people have all turned their eyes and hearts aside from what’s being done in their names. I’m also aware how Jews all over the world won’t have sympathy or compassion from the majority of non-Jews for several generations, if ever. I don’t understand how a Jewish nation came to allowing the starvation and genocide of their neighbors by their own government.
First book should be Strangers in their Own Land by Arlie Russell Hochschild.
It was published about the same time as Hillbilly Elegy (which was crap and I grew up in Appalachia) and gives a nuanced and researched view of Trump appeal.
You are so absolutely and utterly right! People who are in this country legally are being deported for speaking out against Netanyahu. Americans must keep their eyes on the terrible genocide they are speaking against, not primarily on the threat it poses to academic freedom and free speech. We may be in danger of losing those freedoms, but we are not in danger of losing our lives to bombing and starvation. The next president can restore our freedoms, but he can't bring the dead to life.
I for one have not taken my eyes off Gaza. For President Durbin, Murphy, or Van Hollen to save Gaza, there .ust be something and someone left to save.
Learn from Bannon's strategy (and most modern day authoritarians, starting with Hitler) and learn how to strike back twice as hard, it's really not that hard, but it seems progressives just can't get it.
Jeremy, we need less “establish[ment of] a Bewildered Liberals Book Club for people…” and more lessons in how to synthesize inputs, walk & chew gum. American culture, ultimately, is going to need some retooling, or at least a reminder that patriots can love and fight at the same time. Nick’s reporting was great. Pls let him know another read!
Kristoff was great!
"Only Jews are expected to be true Christians."
Excellent
